My new home is built near the beach (far from a 'beach home' though) and the property is mostly sand. After 1.5 years, I have some grass growing, but its far from being a nice yard. What do I have to do to make something decent of this yard?

I would really like to avoid scraping 2 feet off and buying topsoil-- $$ no thanks. Is there anything else I can do to get more grass?

After living on the SC coast for many years, I decided the nicest yards were Bermuda grasses. Good Luck !

Sorry Calvin...You answered your own question...got to get rid of the sand. Or turn your yard into a zen garden (haha)
I have a beach house...we've tried three time to plant grass (st augustine) between the curb and sidewalk...it will not grow...it's too sandy...we've come to finally accept this and the only way to fix it is to scoop down at least 6 inches and then put in top soil

You can grow most grasses in sandy soil.. Actually, Bermuda grass has been grown in direct sand more than 20 years. Golf Greens are almost 100% sand base. The key is watering. You have to water any grass... very regular...... most likely every day...or at least twice a day.....

Add topsoil. Wallah, it is no longer a sandy yard.

We use sand to fill in bare spots and holes in the lawn. Centipede fills it in quickly( I live in middle GA).
Check in the local nurseries and see what they suggest.

St Augustine or Centipede... they both love sand but keep them watered good.
