Do you mean me personally? Since you don't know me, I have no idea why would would give me a gift, much less should. Actually, considering I don't know you, I think I'd take it the wrong way if you DID send me, say, an eCard.
But in the broader scheme of things, I like to give presents as a way of saying "you deserve something nice/fun" or "I was thinking of you when I saw this." Flowers are good for pick-me-ups when someone is having a bad day or "just becuase." Gifts often are in celebration of something big or if I find something at the store that the recipient would love sooooo much that I can't NOT buy it for him/her. I suck at cards, and I'm a bit embarassed to admit that I often don't send them.

When it comes to birthdays, mother/father day, graduations celebration; it has become customary to bring a gift or card; if not both. However; I believe it should be done out of respect and adoration; not required. That way it lessens the pressure of a great opportunity to get together.

I seem to save cards for people that don't live near me or that I don't see often. Getting a card with check/money or giftcard inside of it from someone that doesn't even live in the same state as you shows that person you were genuinely thinking of them. gifts are for someone you can actually give it to face to face.
i'll take either.
