My cat (14 yrs.) was losing weight but wasn't eating at all. The vet diagnosed her as being borderline diabetic and we had to change her food to a senior formula. Your cat might be fully diabetic (a cat can eat more than usual and still lose weight if they are diabetic), but the vet will do a blood test to be sure. In the meantime, switch to a senior formula cat food; at his age, your cat needs more carbs than protein in his diet regardless of his health. I would recommend Iams Indoor hairball care in the pink bag (it's for seniors) - they carry it at Petco, PetsMart and Wal-Mart. Cat Chow Vitality formula (red bag) doesn't have enough carbs.

FYI: try to monitor your cat's litter habits - is he peeing a lot? Also keep an eye on his drinking - is he drinking more water than usual?

There are several things this could point to, especially in an older cat. A lot of older cats will have trouble keeping weight on. Make sure you are feeding a high quality food, maybe even something specifically for trauma or stress. It could be a hyperthyroid problem, but these usually show up earlier than 17 years. It could also be parasites, which are known for making the cat extremely hungry, yet they don't seem to gain any weight. Sometimes putting an egg yolk or kitten food in with the cat's regular food will help with weight gain, but it is best to check with your vet first. It could also possibly be cancer, but if there are no other symptoms, this is unlikely. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.

This happened to my male at age 15.. He had an overactive thyroid. He also started running around like a little kitten, drinking lots of water and urinating in inappropriate places.....

Take him to the vet asap. There are treatments that can help....
