When people swear they do not think about what they are saying. It usually happens out of extreme anger. I recently did a speech on the backround of a few swear words and you would be amazed of what they actually mean. You should do some research and next time you hear someone say a swear word, You can use your knowledge and let them them know the true meaning. Then next time they get ready to they may stop and think that how and what there saying does not make any sense. You will be the intelligent one:)

I think that swearing is bad when it is aimed at a person.
But when swearing is used as an outlet for frustration or anger at a situation - e.g - some one very close to you has been killed and you are angry at the person that subsequently murdered them then i think i can safely say, that the swearing used in that situation is appropriate.
It all depends on the situation.
Also, think about those people that have been diagnosed with 'Tourette's Syndrome' that cannot help but swear because they have an urge to say swear words or jerk the body or do certain things that are beyond their control. These people suffer more everyday than the people around them that hear the swearing and 'might get a little offended'.
Swearing can be used in many different ways but one way which i do not agree on is the way that you stated in the question where some one uses a swear word to purposely hurt some ones feelings without justified motives.

Language is an expression of the person who uses it. For some swear words are offensive and for others they are a normal and everyday part of their language. If swear words hurt your feelings, you might want to reexamine what it is in yourself that makes you so insecure that another person's words can affect how you feel. Because words are just that, words, and until the listener puts a meaning to them, they have no power.

I think that is just like saying I would hurt someone's feelings if I spoke about Jesus and God around a nonbeliever. I agree that they are not the best words to use but if I hurt someone's feelings for speaking the way I want to that could just mean that they are a little too sensitive.

If you look at those people who don't swear, you may find that they are more respectful of others and have a greater self control.

There is no reason to swear. It is just lack of character in the person
