The Canon EOS 350D, or Digital Rebel XT as it's known in the U.S., is by far the best bet. It's a superb camera and delivers excellent shots at 8.2 megapix. There is a vast array of lenses to fit this camera, not only by Canon (expensive) but by other cheaper manufacturers as well, which give good results.
Check out eBay for some great deals.

Nikon D70s. It is absolutely magnificient. It has 6.1 mpx but the pics. are brilliant. Unless you enlarge to a very large size, such as a poster to hang on the wall without sacrificing on the image quality, 8 mpx will be an overkill for regular use.You pay more for something you will never use.

Pics taken in a good quality camera such as 6 or even 5 mpx will give you very good results. Canon Rebel XT and Nikon D70s compete with each other feature to feature.

I have a canon digital rebel 350d (XT)

It's great! Easy to use, easy to hold and I believe it's in that price range. I'm from the US, but if my calculations are correct, it fits your description.

Very clear, nice pictures even with the lens it comes with. I highly recommend.

I've just bought the Canon 350D - body, kit lens, case and 1GB card for £540. Researching around I didn't find anything else that comes near to the specs and quality for the price range - my budget was the same as yours.
