what is the main difference?

All depends how you like to drive. If you have never driven a stick shift (manual) you will need to learn to shift and use the clutch properly. Generally speaking, you get 1-2 mpg better with a stick....because you are controlling the shift points. But stick shift cars generally have lower resale value because not as many people like to drive them.
Part of it is coordination...also, if you are use to braking with your left foot, switching it over the clutch will take some getting use to. Finally, if you live in an area with a lot of hills, I would suggest avoiding a stick shift

okay, for all the people saying that a manual trans is better on gas..... that's only if you drive it the right way...... which very few people do. I prefer a manual because you have a lot more control over how your car drives which makes it more fun. The main difference.... with a manual trans you manually shift gears up and down..... with an auto trans, it does it automatically for you..... get it? An auto is easier to drive than a manual though.

I have 3 cars, two are manual, they are sports cars and therefore manual is the only option for fun fast and race track.
I also have a big lumbering Land Rover, it is an auto, it is a lazy comfortable drive and is great for the M25 in the rush hour, but more important it is really great off road, especially on those steep muddy slopes, and off road is why I got it.
My only critisism is that the brake pedal is not best placed for left foot braking......

Its also good if u want race ur car, Auto is good 4 peace loving people, here u could drive faster but da rate of acceleration will be slower thatn Manual, if u r an amture driver i'll say u better try da Auto coz its hassel free.

just read bobsled answer is this possible in America that most of you drive automatics. was in California and Oregon and the car we drove was a automatic(ford Taurus) what a piece of crap no power even though there was a three litre engine in it with a manual you have full control over all the gears which is a lot safer if and when you need it.

Manual, its more fun. Auto is only for lazy people and Americans. No offence to Americans as ye need it with the vast size of your country

If you've never driven a manual don't try it on a new car! Manuals are funner they give you more control and what else are you gonna do with your right hand anyway?

My grandad told me that if you have only one leg an automatic is great (no clutch pedal!) which was a really weird thing for him to say as he has both legs! I have no preference personally, I have driven both.
