For me, if I ever went to jail it'd be like some wimpy crime and I'd be scared of sleeping when there are menacing people in my cell. Could you ask to switch cells or get a single one? Or would the guards just laugh at you? (how harsh is it in like, normal jails, not the high-security murderer ones???)

I forget who said it, but I'm NOT going to jail. I didn't do anything. I've just always wondered. I don't know, I'm one of those people who just wonders about absolutely everything and I thought this was a good place to ask! But yeah, I'm like the biggest square ever so I don't really have to worry about it. Just curious!

The first few answers are wrong. Jails do segregrate the inmates according to various factors and designate them as mimimum, medium, maximum, and super-max security. However, when first arrest and in the booking/processing center you would be mixed in with any and all classifications. It is not until permanent housing is assigned that classifications will be segregrated.

In prisons it is a more lengthy and accurate process. They often spend 2-3 days just classifying inmates upon arrival. Either way, even in mimimum security, you will have your share of "scary" people who will try to intimidate you.

Suggestion, just avoid jails completely.

Unfortuantly that is often the case. However if you want to get the best of it do a violent crime and get life and you get staeks and free cable every day, all on the taxpayers dollar. You should be able to avoid being assaulted easily enough. However if you are increadibly rich, it doesn't matter what sort of crime you commit, your top of the line lawyers will get you off no matter how much evidence proves your guilt. case in point, Robert Blake, OJ Simpson, miachael Jackson.

You should just make sure to commit a crime with all of your friends so that you guys all share the same jail cell :) That always happens on tv.

No they do separate violent offenders from non-violent offenders. Its no guarantee that you won't run into trouble but minor drug offenders are not in with murders and rapists.

also since it was a minor offenses you will probably have an opportunity to be a " trustee " meaning you work the grounds, kitchen, laundry and if you are lucky enough to get that you will be in the "trustee" tank and that's being around people who are in for the same BS you are

Simple answer, yes.

What, you think there are 'special places' just for you, because you're so 'special'?

Therewill probably be a drunk who will puke all over himself, and you. Might be a drug addict, jonesing and withdrawing, pissing all over everyone. There WILL be some beligerant huge BUBBA who stinks, and wants to poke you, in very sensitive places... with his stiff fingers, elbows, and other hard body parts.

If you get to go from 'holding' to a real cell, until the Judge rules on your case, or, you make bail, you might only be alone with one cellmate, probably someone like 'BUBBA'!

What prompted your question? Have you offended the law, little Angel?

They'll put you in the general population right alongside of drug dealers and such...you get your a-s-s beat too bad...you can request a single cell but you better hope they have space...best thing to do is stay out of trouble so you don't get hurt....

I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE PUT WITH OTHER TYPES OF CRIMINALS. THEY WILL PROBABLY BE SO MISTREATED THAT WHEN THEY LEAVE THE PRISON THEY WILL BE WORSE OFF AND COMMIT MORE SERIOUS CRIMES,OUT OF REVENGE FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM IN JAIL. I AM NOT CONDONING ANY CRIMINAL, i JUST BELIEVE THAT NO GOOD WILL COME OUT OF PUTTING A NON VIOLENT CRIMINAL WITH AN AGRESSIVE CRIMINAL.

It's likely. They don't segregate the population according to crime or scariness.
