How babies think, a book that you should read :-)
reviews
Book Description
A cutting-edge exploration of what evolutionary psychology is teaching us of the development and learning of children, in the tradition of Matt Ridley's The Red Queen and Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct.
Synopsis
Learning begins in the first days of life. Scientists are now discovering how young children develop emotionally and intellectually, and are beginning to realize that from birth babies already know a staggering amount about the world around them. In the first book of its kind for a popular audience, three leading US scientists draw on twenty-five years of research in philosophy, psychology, computer science, linguistics and neuroscience to reveal what babies know and how they learn it.
About the Author
Gopnik is Professor of Psychology at Berkeley; Meltzoff and Kuhl are married to each other and are both Professors of Psychology at the University of Washington.

I am not sure that they think before they learn a language. They copy off their parents, then they learn what the word means.

Even adults don't think in terms of language. They will communicate with each other in those terms, however.
Babies also, don't need language to think. They just cry when they want something. As their needs become more sophisticated they will acquire language as a necessary means of communication.

Complete abstracts. Starting with simple reactions to stimuli, eventualy associating cause with the effect. Much later before specific sounds are connected to physical objects, and even later are "words" connected with feelings.

I would think in a very basic instinctual/emotional way. Most of their actions/reactions are instinctual at first to make sure all their basic needs are met.

I don't know for sure but it would make sense that they think in pictures and physical sensations.
