The EPA knows the air quality all around the US. They're working on it... If only the president would get the EPA to regulate the amout of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions that cars and factories produce. But with the recent trend of electric, hybrid, and other efficient fuels i'm sure the air pollution will keep decreasing.

Air quality in US cities is far BETTER than it was in the past such as, say, 1970.

Almost all cities have had IMPROVEMENTS in overall AQI (air quality index):

Notably, LA, went from 173 in 1990 to 48 in 2000. That is a dramatic improvement, above and beyond progress LA made since the 1970s to get rid of smog.

The EPA is busy coming up with expensive formulations for gasoline and other rules that are quite strict wrt air pollution.

Air quality is a state issue. Your state sets the standards for air quality and enforces it. Any of the businesses in your city that has an emission has to get an air permit from the state and follow their guidelines.
