I use the Garmin GPS 18 with my laptop computer. It works very well, and is not that expensive.

Of course you do need to have the laptop, but even you can buy an older used laptop and the Garmin 18, and still stay within your financial limits!

Tom-Tom is well rated and resonably priced. Consumer Reports just did an article on GPS systems. Check them out.

Garmin is a good one, I just bought it for my dad, but you are going to have to spend about $500 to get a quality one.

What about the Tom-Tom? Ebay has some close to the price you're looking for.

I use a magellan and it works great. I use it for geocaching, and have a fun time. The main differences is color screens, touch screens, voice prompts, and other bells and whistles.
