get them to grow up together

You need to do a slow introduction. Place a couple of baby gates in an opening to a room. Place the dog on one side and the cat on the other. Let them be able to see each other. Dogs are easier than cats at this. When your dog stops barking or growling at the cat treat and praise. Once they are able to look at each other through the gates without hissing or barking you can go to the next step. Have a friend sit with your cat on his/her lap on the couch. Make sure the cat is comfortable and relaxed. Place your dog on a lead and stand at the entrance to the room. Let the dog and cat see each other at a comfortable distance. If everything goes calmly, praise your dog ad take one step closer with the dog. If the dog or cat react badly, remove the dog and start again 30mins later. You should be able to slowly take steps closer to the cat every time. This will take a few days. Every time you should enter the room with your dog, (on the lead), and take a step closer. You should always wait and be relaxed for at least 10 - 15mins each time. Using a chair to sit on will help, and slowly move the chair closer to the cat. Soon you will have both the cat and the dog sitting next to each other comfortably. This takes time and patience.

I have a cat and a dog that get along and the way I did was to close off a room with a gate in the doorway and let them see each other. It took them about a week and now they even sleep on the same pillow next to each other. Good luck.

Give them time. Do not lock them up together! As most people said, it depends on their personality. They should do fine given time, but some never will. I have one dog and 12 cats... They get along great, but my dog hates other dogs. You just never know. Ussually, they don't have to be raised together, maybe i've just had good luck, as I've never had a dog/cat problem.
Good luck.

take a few damp towels and rub them all over the dogs and put them under the cats food, where it likes to be a lot, and where it sleeps, then do the same with the cats, rub the towels on the cat and put them where the dogs sleep, under the dogs food, and where it is most of the day, sometimes I put a towel on my lap when I have one of them with me and it really helped. the cats and dogs will soon get used to the smell and get along

My dog and my cat get along just fine. He even gets along with stray cats as well. I guess it depends on the animal personality

Later in their lives it may be harder, but if the cat and dog are together when they are young, they will often develope a friendship and not fight. The more time the spend together the better.

i dont think that is possible unless the dog is trained from a baby because a cat caqnt be trained as well and does not normally attack a dog.. u can also just ounish the dog like smacking his nose
(not really hard) every time he messis with the cat

let them get used to each other naturally...
(i.e. dont lock them in a room together) they don't have to be puppies/kittens either...we have 2 10 year old cats and a 5 year old yellow lab. they did not "grow up together" and the 3 of them get along just fine. it will just take a little time for them to get used to each other...

Make sure the dogs know that cat means boss... Then the cats will allow the company...

make introductions where you can seperate them if need be. I always had trouble keeping my cat from beating up the rat terrier when she wanted to share the cat food, eventually had to put the cat food up on a shelf where on the cat could jump to eat.
