No it isn't. ..
It just makes it easier to keep him groomed. His hair can be trained into dreadlocks, and remain long, and easier to groom than a constantly brushed coat.
Of course, he would appear more as a Portuguese water dog.

Shave to the skin? No. Monthly grooming. Oh yes. The coat is a bit like velco and EVERYTHING will stick to it! And mats hold moisture and fleas and dirt and odors.
You can go for the corded look, but for most people, it is just too much work to keep clean.
Buy yourself a metal grooming comb and use it at least every other day. Pick a low maintenance "hair do" and your dog will be healthier and happier.

It is not exactly necessary to shave them, but grooming is essential to the health of the dog. Mats can twist painfully and even damage skin if left unattended, and shaved animals are much easier to groom. Unless you are willing to spend a great deal of time every day combing and brushing your poodle I'd just get him/her a hair cut.

Poodles coats are cut shaved or clipped so looks only.
It has not medical reason and you do not need to shave one.
Unless you like the look of that style of coat cut.

I shave my poodle, I shave him because he gets supper hot with all that puffy fur when he goes into our backyard, and he gets burns stuck in his fur so thats not fun for me or him when i have to sit there and pull the burs out, so thats why i think it is easyer to shave them then really just getting them clipped. But those are my reasons i shave my poodle but you my have different one so hope this helps.

If you mean VERY close,no,unless YOU'VE neglected it into a MATTED MESS! Then YES!!!
Do you mean NOT cutting the hair AT ALL?? Boy,that's a disaster!! They'll start to MATT in DAYS!! You can even show them in a "corded" clip (look like HUGE mops!)but they must be clipped on face, feet, tail, belly, etc.
Do you mean a show-clip? No,there's a "kennel-clip" which is an inch or so long all over the body.
Do they need GROOMING???HE** yes

During summertime, when heat can overwhelm a dog, that shave is a good idea. No reason to do so in the other months however.
