Yorkies are notoriously difficult to house break.
You need to put him on a schedule. Only feed him when you know you can put him outside. Once he's out you need to tell him to go potty, and then wait for him to do it. Tell him every few minutes. WATCH HIM. wait for him to potty, as soon as you see him going potty praise him like crazy... dont scare him though.
"good puppy!! good oscar! go potty! thats a good boy, go potty outside! good boy!" make a fuss over him and give him a treat if you like.
Do this every time he potties for a few weeks, and every now and then throughout his doggie life.
Whenever he's inside and piddles, catch him at it, you need to be watching this dog. I know he's small and sneaky, but you need to be the human, be the thinker. catch him while he's peeing, and say in a loud voice, "NO! BAD DOG, potty OUTSIDE!" pick him up and place him outside. tell him he's a bad dog and leave him out there away from you while you clean up his mess.
Dogs want to be with you, so being apart is a form of punishment. he might not realize it at first and just run and play outside. but soon enough he will realize he's out and you're in and ask to come back in with you.
He doesnt need water at night if he has water all day, i know he's a puppy, but its not needed. He's also able to make it through the night without food.
make sure he gets a walk or romp in a little before bed, it will help move his little system along incase theres a poo that needs to take place.
for his size and temperment its not going to do a bit of good to swat him. Yorkies are vindictive, it'll make him want to do it again.. lol. But he will want to make you happy above all else, so as long as you praise him and fuss over him when he's doing the right thing, he will learn quickly.
I have yet to find a pup i couldnt train in this manner to potty on command within two days. And i rescue dogs and have been through this with maaaaaany.
you must be consistant, you must take the time to watch him and feed him when he can go out and potty. He'll catch on eventually.

Hi,
I have a Yorkie also, he's now 7 yrs. old. Yorkies are strong minded dogs (as you probably already know). I've read that it may take 7-9 months to train them to go outside, although some may learn in as little as one or two months. It took my yorkie around 8 months before he was finally trained. As a last resort I would leave him in a crate when I was not home until he finally learned. Don't rub his nose in the poop (sometimes they learn to eat it if you do that). Do scold him or even spank him (more for show than to actually hurt him, Yorkies are small and you should never, never hit him hard at all) with a rolled up news paper (the noise is what's efective not the pain). Be patient, and they will learn even if it takes a while, they are extremely smart dogs but sometimes they have ideas of their own. I hope this helps.

I know it is tempting to use puppy pads becuase it is easier to clean up but it is actually just teaching the dog that it is ok to go potty in the house. You are confusing the dog more than you know. A good way to make sure the dog doesn't go in the house is just take it outside every hour and find a treat that it really likes and give it the treat when it has went potty outside with lots and lots of praise. I have two potty trained dogs and this is how we did it, I never crate trained them. Also put it on a feeding schedual if you haven't already, this way you will have an idea of when the dog needs to go. Both of my dogs were rescues and not potty trained when we got them.

I have a Lhasa Puppy. He took about a year and a half to house break fully. Small dogs have very small bladders so you have to take them out very often: Kye goes out every hour. Start your puppy in a small area, a crate for example. He won't want to stink up his area so he won't "potty" inside. Take him out often and when he comes inside, let him play for a few minutes, always on a leash and in the same area. As he gets better, let him out for a little while longer, always on a leash. That way you have control over where he goes and can watch him and catch him in the act. When he accepts this new area as part of his territory, he won't want to stink it up. Slowly, add new territory.
A second method is to teach him a cue. Whenever you take him outside, make him bark first (this is likely not a good idea with a yorkie as they already tend to bark quite a bit and it re-inforces the behavior.) Always praise and reward him for doing what he's supposed to. He'll catch on faster when there's an incentive and it's easy enough to wean off a reward. For additional advice, contact a licensed trainer. Most trainers have a specific class dedicated to potty training. By the way, this is a very slow process so please don't lose patience.

I have a 2yr old yorkie and it took us a yr to train him. I never did the paper training. I just did the crate training, just leave enough room for him to turn around in. After awhile, move the divider back and continue until he has the whole cage. It takes yorkies about a yr to get fully trained they are very hard. Here are some suggestions: as soon as you get up take him to the door while saying ready to go outside or need to go outside. Take him out and say go potty when he goes praise him. When he does it put him up..be firm. Is the dog fixed? If not you may want to do this. My yorkie is and he seemed to catch on pretty quick. If he doesn't go when you take him out take him back in and then bring him back out. Its hard and be patient.

dogs are routine animals. get into a routine, this may help. for example: in the morning when you wake up immediately take him outside but leave him out for a good time (15mins-ish). try to take him out every half to one hour. also, watch for the signs ... sniffing around, circling around for a place to potty, once you observe this immediately take him outside to potty. use key words (like my dogs know "potty", my fiance will ask them if they want to "go outside" they have no clue what that is but when he asks if they have to "potty" they perk right up)
also, a few minutes after you feed him take him out to potty.
consistency is key
like blackwidow mentioned about yorkies being difficult to potty train, try the crate when you're gone as well as a few times when you're home. but don't use it as a form of punishment, it's supposed to make them feel secure. if you're lucky, he'll hang out in there when you least expect it ;) i have a friend with two yorks and they potty in the house, too. BUT, they let them outside twice a day!?!? they're about 2 and 3 years of age ....
try contacting a trainer as well?
be patient. i hear alot of ppl have a difficult time potty-training small dogs but it CAN be done!

putting his nose in it or swatting him will not help. You need to crate train him. Put him in a crate with paper and let him out frequently. Don;t let him have the run of the house.
Make sure you cleaned where he went very well because they will smell it and go back to that same spot.
Look up some training online and implement it. Poor dog doesn;t know why he's getting hit o having his face mashed in poop!

I have a Yorkie and I hear that they are the hardest dog to potty train. I still don't have her trained and she is over a year old. Try crate training him. That is what I am about to do to mine. I hear that is the best way for stubborn dogs, like Yorkies. They really are like little people. They have minds of their own and if they don't want to do something they will fight you over it. Believe me he will ignore you for a while but you have to stand your ground with him or he'll never learn.

I HAVE A SHIH-TZU THEY ARE SMALL DOGS TOO, SO I KNOW THIS WILL BE HARD, BUT IT WORKS!!
GET A SMALL DOG CAGE AND KEEP HIM IN THERE ALL THE TIME, ONLY TAKE HIM OUT WHEN IT'S TIME TO GO OUTSIDE AND POTTY( ABOUT ONCE AN HOUR) LEAVE HIM A BLANKET AND FOOD AND WATER IN THE CAGE. NO TOYS. IT WON'T TAKE LONG TO HOUSE BREAK HIM AFTER THAT, ANIMALS DO NOT LIKE TO POTTY WHERE THEY SLEEP AND EAT. MY SHIH-TZU WILL NOT GO TO THE BATHROOM IN THE HOUSE EVEN IF SHE HAS TO HOLD IT ALL DAY
