Well, mining is big business. A lot of the environmental impact of mining could be reduced if it was practised in the right conditions, but it is rarely the case. One of the big problem of mining is lack of regulations... and since it is cheaper to make holes and destroy the environment than to look for alternatives try to make it safer... You get the picture.

Some of the good effects are jobs for people. There are whole economies built around some mines. Another good effect is when you turn on a light switch you have light. A lot of electricity is produced from mining coal. All of the metals we use are mined. Many of the elements used in detergents for cleaning are mined. So many things we use every day are mined we can't just stop mining. Open pit mines are safer for workers than underground mines but they are not nice to look at till they are reclaimed. Mining is most certainly dirty and hard on the environment. The mining industry is getting better about pollution but trust me they are not held to the same standard as the rest of industry.

Good effects - We can get minerals. We can get good quality water. We can exploit natural resources for productive purposes.

Bad effects - Over burden spoil generation. Disposing of this over burden spoils is very difficult. Rehabilitation of mined area is very difficult and costly.

A good effect is when parks are created when the lands are reclaimed. There is a nice one in our area that the land was reclaimed and donated by AEP that you can camp for free if you register. It has tons of trees, plants, wildlife, and little lakes.
