Always speak the truth. He will thank you for it later, no matter what he says now.
You owe it to yourself and to the relationship to be honest up front with any relationship. If, after you explain this, you both want to continue to see eachother, then so be it, but if not, then you both will be better off in the long run. Life is too short to get caught up in the wrong relationship.

The last thing you need to be worrying about is whether his feelings are hurt by you telling him. Having a baby or not having a baby is a heck of a lot bigger deal than that. It's not something to take lightly. If you're not ready yet, tell him so. If you are sure you will be ready at some point in the future, or after one or both of you have done something that you feel needs to be done first (reached some age, finished college, got a job, bought a house, whatever), explain that to him. The two of you need to discuss this, in detail, and if someone's feelings get hurt, well, too bad, they need to get over it. Long term, if he wants kids and you never want kids, the relationship may well be doomed, you may be better off to break it up now.

If you are not married. Tell him that is the reason why. You want to be married before you have children.
If you are married but havn't been married long enough to know if you want to bare his children then tell him I'm not certain we're emotionally ready for children.
If you have been married for a while and you don't want children, tell him that children are expensive. Have you seen what it costs to raise a child now? From birth to age 18, it's over $300,000.00. That's right! It's just expensive. Have you priced any diapers lately? How about baby food? And clothes? Bottles, toys, shoes, baby beds, child proofing the house (cabinets, doors, etc.) all that adds up to a lot of money.
Do you have insurance with the company you work for? If not, tell him that you first need to get insurance in order to pay for the doctor bills and you can't sign up until (whenever you want to say).
Do you two have a family pet? Tell him you would rather start out with a dog. Let's see how we can do raising a dog, first. Then if all goes well, sure I would love to have your baby.

Don't be too worried about hurting his feelings, or you'll end up with a baby. Just tell him that you're not ready! There's plenty of time to have babies, believe me. I had 2 before I was even 21-years-old. I don't know how old you are, but it does take a lot of work. And you can't have a life of your own unless you get a babysitter first....I'm a single mom, and I never thought I would be. Make sure your life is where you want it before you have children. I'm attending college and working full time, while raising two babies by myself. I have NO help, and it's hard...very hard.

Explain to him that you re not saying that you never want a baby with him, but just that you don't feel ready as yet, and that there's time why rush now.

Hey, if you don't want one, tell him...he'll have to deal with it. After all, the baby's not going to be in HIS womb for 10 months. But I would say simply "im not ready for one".
