The following are all secular charities that support Africa (and Asia). None of these charities waste money indoctrinating the poor of Africa and Asia into Christianity. These charities all buy food & education for their recipients rather than bibles, and pay for nurses and doctors rather than priests. None of the money you send to any of these charities goes to pay for pretty church windows, beautiful lawns at the vicarage, or to fund the strange behaviours of clergymen in their dresses. I'm sure by your name that this wasn't what you wanted to hear, but there you go!

- 21st Century Child operates a "shoe box" scheme, encouraging schools to collect shoe boxes containing small gifts, which they then forward to needy children in Eastern Europe. See www.21stcenturychild.org .

- A popular charity amongst humanist groups and many schools is the Aquabox scheme, in which welfare items from a recommended list are collected to fill a water treatment box, which costs £50.00. This then becomes a useful kit that can be sent quickly to disaster areas. Each box is numbered and linked to the donor, so that you can find out where your box went. See www.aquabox.org for more information.

- UNICEF Inspired Gifts help to save, improve and protect the lives of children, and bring hope to communities all around the world. See http://www.unicef.org.uk/store/InspireGifts.aspx?grp=5D86D4AA-E5A4-4DFD-8552-6EFCC8612CC1

- Via Oxfam , you can buy someone a flock of chickens or a camel, or textbooks or satchels or dinners for a third world school. For these and many other life-changing or life-saving gifts, see www.oxfamunwrapped.com .

- Good Gifts is a means of getting suitable gifts to people who really need them, endorsed by a range of worthwhile charities. Buy a goat for Rwanda or a bicycle for a midwife in Cambodia or help turn weapons of war into farm implements, via www.goodgifts.org .

- The environmentally conscious can adopt an animal from an endangered species via www.wwf.org or a whale or dolphin via www.wdcs.org . You can protect an acre of rainforest at www.worldlandtrust.org , or www.rainforestfoundationuk.org . Closer to home, you can sponsor a tree through www.woodland-trust.org.uk . All these send certificates to mark the gift.

- There is, of course, the annual Blue Peter appeal, which is always carefully chosen so that virtually any family can contribute something. Keep an eye on www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter for this year’s appeal.

Buddhist and Jain medical teams are very active in Africa. The quality of mercy is not limited to Christianity. People of the Jewish faith are very active in good works around the world. Doctors without Borders has members of many faiths. They're in the frontlines. However they don't toot their religions. They just care and want to help people who are less fortunate.

Did you know Bono used to be in a christian band years ago. So it is likely that he was still influenced by Christianity. are Buddhist and Muslim countries sending help? Is there a big wiccan effort?
