Well, for the vast majority of users Window's Disk Defragmenter is more than sufficient. But, since are willing to spend money, Diskeeper is a good investment. Window's Disk Defragmenter is an on-demand defragmenter, which means it only defrags when you run the utility. However, Diskeeper dynamically defrags the hard drive, which means that it is always defragging the hard drive in the background. Diskeeper claims that it relocates files on the hard drive such that they are in closer proximity to one another and thus faster to retrieve. The download link is www.diskeeper.com. Will it turn your PC in to a super computer? No. But, it might shave off a couple of milliseconds which when added up improves performance.

Actually for XP it doesn't help much because the NTFS formatted volumes make use of space very efficiently. People do it because they feel comfortable doing it and feel better. If you have to defragment the best program is what came with XP.
