What does a major/massive cytokine cascade to do a human? and would immunosuppressive drugs stop this?

A massive ctyokin cascade is termed a cytokin storm which is often fatal. I think its treated with corticosteroids like prednisone. Immunosupressive drugs typically do not elicit a quick enough response.
