Find a used early 90s diesel Jetta. That is your best bet. There are some cheap gasoline cars in that range like the Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift, but none of them have any quality to them and will junk out on you in no time. You have a shot at getting a decent car out of the Jetta.

My 1991 Honda Accord LX. Selling it for $2350 OBO. It costs about $20-$25 to fill it up and gets almost 400 miles to a tank (about 28MPG on the highway.) It has CC, PW, PDL, PM, CD player w/detachable face, rear window defroster, cold A/C, automatic, new tires, new battery. It is in great mechanical condition, although the paint on the hood/roof/trunk top is faded from the sun. I bought two new vehicles, so i am selling this one as I don't drive it as much anymore because i drive my pickup for work.
