It means that at the end of days any of God's true followers who are "in Babylon" will see the truth and come out of Babylon. Now what "Babylon" refers to here I'm not sure. Some say Babylon will be a literal place. Some say Babylon refers to the false religions. Some even specify the Catholic church as Babylon.

Modern day Babylon is nonexistant. The Bible foretold the beginning of its desolation in the year 539 B.C.E. This was completed by the 4th century C.E. Since then, it has been a desolate wasteland in the terms of what is used to be (Jeremiah 51:37). Nowadays, many people take the book of Revelation quite literally to think that Babylon the Great is the same geographic Babylon (Revelation 17:5). But the book of Revelation also talks about a dragon and a lamb (Revelation 12:3;14:1). Obviously, this is all symbolic for something bigger. Babylon the Great symbolizes false religion today, because ancient Babylon was the seat of pagan religion in its day. Babylon the Great will be destroyed in the Great day of the Almighty...meaning, false religion that professes to attach itself to God, but instead angers Him, will be eradicated, and only worship that pleases God will survive (Matt 7:21-3;Revelation 14:8). Afterall, He is the Almighty. He picks who pleases him and who doesn't.

Babylon in Revelation is not the literal city, but is the spiritual city, which is very wicked, like the literal city was. It is ruled by the Catholic pope and the system of church controlling the state, and all who follow her will be destroyed along with her, after receiving the seven last plagues. Even if you do not even believe in the catholic system, or even if you are not a catholic, if you are not on Gods side the He says that you are against Him. So, if you are not a Saint, then you are going to be lost - forever. There is still a little time left, do not be like those in the time of Noah, and wait until the door is closed and the rains (plagues) are falling, because by then IT WILL BE TO LATE!

william r has it right! (Babylon is the Catholic Church)
BABYLON THE GREAT
Mostly (Rev.17:5)"Mother of Harlots" means it has "daughters" that are following the church's beliefs. Many don't know that the Catholic Church has "casted all the true doctrines to the ground and replaced them with false ones(Dan.8:12). For instance: Trinity (saying Jesus was here as spirit and flesh); when the Bible says (1John 4:2-3; 1John 1:7)"he came fully in the flesh."

These 10 (Rev.17:12-13)rulers will be giving their support to a coming union of church and state in Europe, which will aspire to world dominance. After an interlude of apparent peace and prosperity, the system will plunge the whole world into a nightmare(World War 3). That's why Jesus has to come back; he has to save the world from total destruction. Matthew 24:21,22,29,30.
For example:(Daughter churches that are following the Mother Church)
CATHOLIC CHURCH--
Trinity, Going to heaven, Rapture, Jesus's Death Friday and Resurrection Sunday, Worship Sunday, Pagan Feast Days and etc.
SUNDAY CHURCHES--
Follow the same beliefs.
SDA(Seventh Day Adventists)--
Trinity, Going to Heaven, Pagan Feast Days, Jesus's Death Friday and Resurrection Sunday.
OTHER SABBATH CHURCHES--
One or more of the Catholic Doctrines.
JEHOVAH WITNESSES--
Jesus's Death Friday and Resurrection Sunday
I only know one church that isn't following the Catholic Church and that is The Living Church of God.(Eph.5:27; Acts 20:28

From an archaeological perspective, Babylon is an ancient empire. Why do we care what the Bible says about its future if it is already in the past?

There is no current Babylon so your question is null and void. If you are referring to current day Iraq, then as always with anything that happens, it will be God's will what happens to them and not mans!

Read Revelations. Read it in a NKJV or simmilar translation so you can understand it a little better.
