Go to the link below--if you're using Windows, that is--to determine how to use regedit. All sorts of problems could arise if you use regedit incorrectly--too many to list here. Essentially, though, you could delete entries that would cause your system to malfunction. The registry, basically, contains information about how your system runs, so tampering with necessary entries will cause your system to run in unpredictable, haphazard, incomplete, and incorrect ways.

Let's say you delete a file or a folder or a program from your computer. The registry will contain references to whatever it was you deleted. That just takes up unnecessary space in the registry. You might go into the registry to delete those items since they are no longer needed.
But it's a lot safer to use a registry cleaning software. Lot less chance of making a mistake and deleting the wrong thing.

Windows registery is a part of it that can be helpful in many cases. You can change the settings of almost everything on a windows through the registery keys, like changing the direction of special folders(My Documents, etc.) or lots of other things to do with that. But didn't get what you exactly meant.

Well if you're trying to use diskcleaner and it keeps locking up at the compressing old files stage, then you can go into the registry to delete that part of the search.
