Called the property tax collector the other day and there were two greeting messages. The first in English (20 seconds long) the second in Spanish (30 seconds long) The message then gave directions to push a number for Spanish, or Korean or ? ad nausea. I have no problem with pushing a button for another language other than English but to have to listen in Spanish before I get the choice to push a button for language seperation?
Outside of being somewhat offended by having to listen to Spanish for another 30 seconds, how can a government office use another language (other than English) for a greeting?
I wrote a letter of complaint to the Tax Collector and want to follow up but can't get deffinitive law on this issue. Someone suggests that English was recently made official language. Is this true? Anyone have ideas on this?

Yah, Yah! I know others speak diff. languages. I noted that above. But to become a citizen here, you have to show English speaking/writing skills. To cater to those (Tax office) who don't operate in English, indicates either foreigners own a minority/majority (as someone put it/) of our US property or we are catering to people here, who are apparently illegal. Is there some other conclusion one can come to?

Outrageous!!! I speak 8 different languages, but that doean't mean everyone has to... The official language of America is still English! Don't sell yourself short, why should we all speak Spanish???
We didn't immigrate to Spain/ or other Spanish speaking country! We are citizens of USA!
And I don't want to get used to it, cuz that's how things get out of control! you can choose to speak Spanish becasue it's your mother's tongue, or because you like it, nothing wrong about that but don't make your neighbour learn it, he's been here before you.
How would you feel if it was Japanese you had to learn instead of English?? or some other language... like from now on you need to learn Russian??? huh? huh??? what cuz they have a sindicate??? or a Union, or some other gig like that? If we don't do something to stop these things they will proceed on their own... We are not known for letting people walk all over us... we're nice people, but if you stick your foot in our dish you get burned!
Nah! Learn English you lazy bones or go where you can speak what you like! Again, nothing wrong with learning a foreign language!
I think you should follow up and I think you should get some friends to make the same move... This is freacking scarry!

Yes English is suppose to be the official language but in some places in Florida you can't even get a job unless you speak spanish. I can understand the new spanish speaking residents needing a translation on the phone but many will not even try to learn the language of the country they choose to live in. We don't accommodate the Germans, French, Swedes, etc like that.

Get over it!With a name like Juan Carlos,you should appreciate your spanish heritage.Hahahahahahahaha.
Besides,think of how many spanish speaking ppl are saying the same thing as you ,only reversed."I wish I didn't have to sit and hear all those recordings in english over and over again."Deal with it.
English should be our official language,but only cause the majority speaks it.No one would ask another country to change it's language if a bunch of us moved there.I don't know,you might, cause you hate to hear recordings in other languages,lol.

what the? in spanish??? that's crazy, I'd be pissed if I called LA COUNTY and got a greeting in Korean or Portuguese!! it's dumb! LEARN ENGLISH!!
