He says this as a metaphor for the human condition. We are born into a world of sin and have no way out of it but to "die to sin" and be "born again" a new person through our faith in Jesus. It is more poetic language and metaphor, and Zaccheaus said the same thing. He said how could a grown man climb back in the womb.

What a variety of answers...If you will read the rest of that in John chapter 3 you will find that it is a spiritual experience. In other parts of the Bible it talks about God putting his spirit in us to do many things. Walk in holiness, be able to live the christian life, know that we are christians, lots of things are listed.
The main issue is that a man must experience a born again experience to enter God's kingdom. This involves you inviting the Holy Spirit or God to forgive you for your sins, and take over in your life. It is a question of you giving your will to him..
When I was born again, I prayed and when I finished I didn't want to sin against God any more. He changed me inside, something that I could not do.. Hope this helps, e-mail me if you have other questions, some here are pretty far out..

Actually none of the answers above me are correct. The correct answer is this: When He said you must be born again, he was talking about being baptized in water. In order to be saved you must hear the word, believe the word, repent of your sins, confess that He is the Son of God and be baptized for the remission of your sins. Jesus was born again after three days. He arose and conquered death. He told Nicodemus not to marvel at the fact that he said "you must be born again", because He was not talking about and actual re-birth, he was talking about baptism.
Keep reading the bible and you will find the answers. Don't let me or anyone else tell you what to believe. There is only one way to find that answer and that is with study. Good luck.

It means to be "born again" spiritually, at least that's what most evangelical Christians believe.
It's interesting that many mainstream Christian faiths don't take it that way so there are certain Christian groups that believe other Christains, no matter how good they may be, will not get into Heaven because they are not born again.
Sound confusing? That's because it is.

it means that you must have a renewal of the mind. when you accept Jesus christ into your heart and soul your mind will be different. You will feel clean and all of your sins will be washed away by the blood of Jesus. You will become like a new creature. And not that you will be perfect but since you become a new creature and have a love for christ you ill not a an every day sinner any longer. Read 1 John chapter3 if any man sinneth the Father is not in him. You will be made new and holy

It's one of the few references to reincarnation they didn't dare delete. Maybe it was the "verily, verily" [meaning truly, literally] with which Jesus prefaced that statement that humbled the interpreters and editors ever so slightly.
How perplexingly silly that Christians fumble, slip and stumble all over this direct statement in a desperate effort to make it say something other than what it says in plain, direct honesty: be born again. He couldn't have made it more clear than that. If he had meant 'be saved through faith' or 'get baptized' he would have said so, in spite of what the sheep have been told to baaa to the contrary.

Joh 3:1 And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
Joh 3:2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him.
Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him: Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:4 Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born again?
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered: Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Joh 3:7 Wonder not that I said to thee: You must be born again.
Joh 3:8 The Spirit breatheth where he will and thou hearest his voice: but thou knowest not whence he cometh and whither he goeth. So is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Joh 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said to him: How can these things be done?
Joh 3:10 Jesus answered and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?
Joh 3:11 Amen, amen, I say to thee that we speak what we know and we testify what we have seen: and you receive not our testimony.
Joh 3:12 If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not: how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?

All Jesus wants us to do is ask him to come into our life.Admit you are a sinner and we cannot go through life without his guidance.Once you say that to Jesus with all your heart and believe it truly , you are "Born Again" with God in your life.It is such a simple thing he asks of us and from the moment you say it you are saved .You actually feel like the world of troubles have been lifted .He makes it so simple , you do not need anyone but yourself to say this to him , no Pastors etc.although they are good guidance.
Without saying this Jesus is not with us in our spirit.God will not allow ANYONE into the Kingdom of Heaven who does not believe. And to believe you need to let him know you do.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

The concept of being "twice born" (first physically, then spiritually) predates Christianity. It is found in Hinduism, where the upper castes were considered "twice born" while the lower castes were little better than animals. In the contect of Christianity, it refers to a change in values, outlook, and orientation to become a proponent of Christianity.

It means that you must die to yourself (our own self will and weaknessess of the flesh)
then you are born again to the spirt (wanting to and following GODs will for you) you will never get this perfect, and that is why Jesus paid the price for our sins. So that even though we are constantly failing, we know we can pick ourselves up, and get back on track and keep working toward GODs will for us.
We have the ceremonial baptizm to show outwardly to other Christians, what we have done inwardly for GOD.
