I saw this on super-nanny.....
First of all, have her help you collect every single binky in the house. Put them in a little bag or basket and tell her the binky fairy is coming to take them away for the babies, and she'll leave a present. Hang it in a tree outside before bed. AT night, replace the bag with a very special gift, maybe include a toothbrush to show her that big kids need to take care of their teeth (which doesn't include a pacifier). AFter this, no more pacifier no matter what. You cannot give in to this if she starts asking for them. She will get over it soon. 3 and a half is way too old for a binky and can do serious damage to not only baby teeth, but the adult teeth behind them.

Take it away NOW! Some friends of ours let their daughter keep her pacifier until she was 4, and now she has speech problems (she talks like she has the pacifier in her mouth). She's 5 1/2 now, and we can still only understand some of what she says.
It will be rough for a few days, but don't give in! Good luck!

3 1/2 is WAY too old for a pacifier! You need to throw the damn things in the garbage!! The first couple days might be hard, but you'll get through it! Good Luck!!

You've gotten a lot of good (if direct) advice here, but I'll just add in a suggestion that my friend did (which worked for bottle weaning.) You might just have to "accidentally" lose them some day very soon.
She told her daughter that there were children who did not have any and how nice it would be if they could help them. (I'm sure she worded this better than I just did.) So she got her daughter to help her gather all of the bottles (or binkies) and put them in a bag to donate. (For hygeine reasons, they actually just went in the trash.) But then she not only got over it, she learned an important lesson about helping others, which a 3 year old can definitely understand. I believe she then rewarded her for making such a great decision.
Otherwise, I think the binky fairy was a great idea.

Very dilllute, mild cayenne pepper solution. Also, consult a doctor for a mild emetic for children. Of course, that means everytime they get the urge for the pacifier be handy with the mop and bucket.

Make a big deal about the Pacy Fairy and how they come to visit when they think the kid is a "big boy / girl". Talk about the Pacy Fairy for a few days.
Then after the child goes to sleep, take the pacifer away and leave a nice toy on their bed. They wake up to the new toy and are all excited.

Throw it away and put up with the crying for a week until they forget about it. It's not rocket science here. Children will succumb to patterns of life quicker than adults do. That's why teaching them another language at a young age works better than later in life. You are the adult.......do the hard thing......you are the adult......your are the adult.....you are the adult.

Tough love.
Take it away. He/she will be mad and it will be rough for a few days. He/she will probably have a hard time falling asleep without it, but your child will get over it.
By the way, maybe you should wait until after the Fourth of July (assuming you're in the U.S.) That way you can enjoy your holiday. :)

Try this...pretend that you "forgot" it somewhere (like Target or grandma's). They will ask for it for a day or two, then will find something else that gives them the "security" they need. Buy him/her a new toy -let them pick it. If this does not work, you can always bring it out...because, if God forbit you would lose it for a day or two I think you both would survive. Good luck!
