It couldn't hurt, but make sure she actually cares about her own history. My family for example is pure Mexican, but they don't care at all about their own history. You may also want to find out how traditional she is. If she's very traditional then it would be a good idea to read up on traditions and customs as well as history. Some cultures will get seriously offended if you look them in the eye and others will get offended if you don't look at them in the eye and your ignorance of their customs will make no difference to them. Like I said, ask her about what she likes and if she does actually care about Russian history, but look up a few historical facts just in case she does. Then you can have a good conversation.

You can if you want to but the best way is to be yourself and be sincere about it. I guess that will impress her more than you telling her russian history.
