I have a shopping PROBLEM! It used to be a major time consumer and stress reliever for me, however, I'm getting older and finding it really stupid to squander my money away on endless amounts of clothes, shoes, bags, makeup, etc. Why can't I stop buying things??

For about two months I completely stopped going to stores and buying junk. I even wore the same bag for a few months. I saved over 2300 in those two months and started a savings account. I haven't yet touched the money but now I have the urge to buy junk yet again! And my room is STUFFED with clothes that alot of them I don't even wear! Help!

This is an emotional disorder to be sure, sadly, it isn't being helped by Madison Avenue advertising agencies. The web seems to have a lot of information regarding disorders of this type and the path through them to something considered helpful is confusing at best. The big question is this, how much of a problem is this to you really? Are you willing to do what is necessary to solve this issue in your life. As one who flew a little close to this disorder, for me, the cure was in finding that the momentary thrill from the aquisition of some new "toy" was short-lived and would never give me any real long lasting happiness. I wish you luck, it isn't an easy thing to live with.

Find the things you feel are missing in your life in yourself. Look inward more that searching outside yourself for happiness. That will be the one thing that will last beyond all the material items you might obtain.

Put your saved money into a CD or Roth IRA (2000 minimum startup), it really can't be touched after that, and will make you lots of money in the future.

Find some of the things you have bought over the years and have a yard sale. Sell some of the things you have bought and are really attached to for no reason other than the physical "prettiness" of the item - you may not even wear or use these items but for some reason you are hanging ontu them- and that's not healthy, getting rid of them can help you get rid of your problem also.

Once you are able to unattach yourself from some of these things which you don't need and have spent way too much money on, you might find it easier, day by day. You'll see that it isn't THINGS in life that bring you happiness, but people and experiences. And by all means keep going shopping for fun, but don't focus on buying meaningless things, rather focus on the fun EXPERIENCES you have while shopping. It's a much healthier way to look at it all :)

I know a good thing to do:
1. compare: Do I liek this _______ as much as my favorite _______? If not, DON'T GET IT.
2. If it's fatty or sugery items, ask yourself: "Do I need this? Do I want to be fat or skinny?" Ten put it into a jar.
3. If you want to have money for emergencies and not spend it on junk, then get a jar or container and make it lock but keep one long slit in it and give your mom or a trusted person the key and put 1/2 of your money in the jar everytime you get some. Keep the other half for whatever but save the other.
Good luck to you!!!

I've had this same problem for so long. I'll spend and spend and then - just stop. Sometimes, I'll buy something that's truly needed and feel guilty about it. Then, to PROVE I shuldn't feel so guilty, I'll buy something else! I swear, it is a vicious cycle.
Now - I'm "leveled out" guess you'd say. I still love to buy things, but I don't have the urge to do so like I once did. Hopefully, I've 'trained' myself to think in this direction.
Good luck. It's tough, I know.

OCD Obsessive Compusive Disorder. I do it when I am stressed. I would consult a therapist, sometimes it could be a medicated condition.
One positive way to get your money back, EBAY.
But seriously, go to your local library and real about OCD. There are many forms of it. If one hits home, definitely see a therapist.

Omg that's terrible. I would call the police and let them know you are concerned about a family who you are friends with. Her mom more than likely has a hoarding problem... it is actually a mental disorder that makes the person buy and but and buy nonstop. The police will help find proper help for her.

Sit down and make a budget, and see what you could be saving. And stick with it! Save for when your old and feeble, anything but just spending it on crap. Save for something that has resale value...invest it. I wish I had money to just blow...I dont even know what thats like.
