Both can be acoustic or electric.I would buy a fairly good quality acoustic six string to learn on.It'll help strengthen your fingers and if you like to sing it's great to accompany you.Electrics are alot of fun and in general easier on the finger tips. Then you also have to buy a chord and an amp.For just starting I'd go with the acoustic six string. You can always learn the bass as the strings are eadg and six string is eadgbe (even a dog gets big ears)Mandolin and violin are the exact opposite of a bass with the strings being gdae.

I assume you mean electric guitar and electric bass guitar?
An electric guitar has six strings, tuned to (in standard tuning) EADGBE.
A standard electric bass has four strings, tuned to (in standard tuning) EADG.
Both can have more strings (I personally love string acoustic guitars).
But whats the real difference? A bass is tuned an octave lower. Thats really all it is.
As for playing style, of the two, electric guitar is much more of a lead instrument, hence, better to play by yourself. A bass guitar, however, backs up electric guitars in alot of songs, so it has some cool harmonies if you play it. Furthermore, a bass guitar has a cooler sound, and if you ever want to join a local band, they are usually looking for bass guitarists.

A bass guitar has a thicker neck and generally fewer strings with equal intervals (typically 4 strings). It has a longer neck, weighs more and the stringers are thicker.
It is probably easier to play electric rhythm guitar, although after that bass guitar is quite easy.
The Bass guitar and the electric guitar share the same 4 top stings ( the thicker or lower sounding ones), but the Bass guitar is an octave lower (and thus has even thicker strings).
Electric guitar strings are cheaper to buy, but they need to be changed more often.
Bass guitars are easier to tune than electric guitars.
Most Bass guitars require a wide hand span, although an exception to this is the Fender Jazz bass or the Richenbacher 4001 or the Steinbergen.
Electric guitars require more intonation (12th fret harminic adjustment) and more precise fingering to prevent "bending" a string.
Get a good instrument. At least a Fender Squire or a decent Yamaha or Ibanez. ($250 to $500).
If you become good at and and like to play, save up and get a GREAT instrument like a Fender or Gibson American made (Strat, Tele from Fender or Les Paul DeLuxe from Gibson). ($2,500 to $3,000)
For basses, Richenbacker 4001, Steinbergen, Fender Jazz are probably the best, although the Fender Bassman is probably the most widely used (club).\
($400 to $2,000).

An electric guitar can play just about anything. I would definately go with that if you are going to play by yourself. I like playing acoustic guitars though. The bass guitar plays the low low notes in the songs, but not to where you'd be able to understand the song like you do with the other guitars.

ALL guitars can be either electric or acoustic.
A bass guitar has 4 strings and probably is the easier of the two to learn to play.
The 6 string guitar and 12 string guitar take more
talent and practice.

there are electric and acoustic guitars as well as basses. I play guitar, so i'd lean that way, but i've also played bass by myself before too. it all really depends on what sound you like to create the most. bass is mostly used to accompany the guitar in a band, but if you like to listen to bands like "the who", and "pink floyd", then you might want bass. also, if you know friends who are in a band and need a bassist, go ahead and volunteer. ONE BIG DIFFERENCE: the frets (metal bars that go all the way up the neck, that make the sound higher or lower) are much FARTHER apart on a bass. If you have small hands, you may not be able to reach the places you need to to play fluently on bass. BOTTOM LINE: go to a music store and talk with an employee, he/she should let you play both, and then decide for yourself.

a bass has 4 strings and it has a lower sound. a guitar has 6 strings. to play by yourself a guitar is better because a bass is more of an accompanying instrument where you need to be in a band. you can still play it yourself but i think a guitar is better. since you can experiment by yourself and ya...
