I suspect that all of the potential energy sources have been identified. The trick is to make them economic and practical. There simply aren't enough folks out there with the brains and cash to do even the simplest of work on any new energy source.
Look at hydrogen. Sounds great at first blush but right now there is no way to produce it in a manner that yields a net increase in energy. It takes more energy right now to make hydrogen than you will get when you burn the hydrogen!!
The oil companies are really not worried. Just plastic production alone will use a great deal of the petroleum and that demand isn't going to become smaller.
Bottom line: Nice idea but not practical.

The trouble is not with inventing a new fuel, but with convincing all of the people who have made billions of dollars off of the oil industry (hello, wars in the middle east!?) to not only give that up, but allow someone else to make that money! Most of our politicians eithr have their fingers in the oil industry or are paid by those who do. Good luck getting those powerful men to let go of that security. They don't care about your grandchildren. They care about money and power.

We have plenty of new fuels - hydrogen, natural gas, fuel cells, , ethanol, hybrid cars, electric cars.
The challenge is to make it cheaper than oil-based fuel, which requires a lot of investment.

I think that it is worth a try. What's the worst that could happen? They wouldn't succeed? Then we wouldn't be any more worse off then we are right now.

It would have to be a dire emergency for anyone to do something drastic because it goes against human nature.
