my neighbor is a single 26 year old somewhat free spirited man. He went to stay with a friend in another state last thursday and was supposed to be back Saturday July 1st. On the 1st my neighbors mother started calling incessantly wanting me to go see if my neighbor got back safely. By sunday the 2nd my neighbors mother was panicked and hysterical because he wasnt back and hadnt called. We called the friend he was supposed to be staying with, who said he was last seen the night of saturday the 1st leaving a bar with two strangers and nobody had heard anything since.

Well all day sunday he didn't come home and now it is monday july 3rd. His mom wants to file a missing persons report and wants me to tell the police what I know (which is nothing). I told her since he is a single guy and a free spirit maybe he just met someone and is running around. I'm not so sure its time to call the FBI just yet. Is his mom over reacting? should we wait? file a report?

It depends on where you are. Where I work, You can immediately file a report on a missing person 21 years old or under.

Older than 21, and we look for suspicious circumstances. If I answered your call, the fact that he was seen leaving a bar with two strangers and hadn't been seen since would be sufficient to meet the suspicious circumstances requirement.

The main reason for our state's "suspicious circumstances" requirement, is really for adults (usually women) trying to leave an abusive relationship. She has a right to "disappear." If a husband files a report and we find the woman, we don't immediately report her location to the husband. We investigate that she is safe and her needs are being met and then advise her of the report being filed. If she is in no danger, we don't want to enable an abuser to find her.

And contrary to popular belief, you aren't bothering us when you call. That's what we do, we come and help when you call.

I'd go ahead and call your local agency and attempt to file the report. Make sure that you advise that he was last seen with strangers leaving the bar.

24-48 hours is a general time to become alarmed and file a report. even if he is a free spirit, he may be in trouble. is he known for not staying to plans? coming home on time? if no, then this is an oddity that must be followed up on. you do know something (tho it may seem like not a lot). you know your neighbor enough to make an educated guess on his behaviors. you know when he was supposed to show up at home. you may know more than you think. if he left a bar with two strangers and this is unusual, you must assume he is in danger and you can help!

Technically speaking, it depends upon where you live.

In Illinois, there is no waiting period. Most officers are misinformed and they tell you 24 or 48 hours.... OR they know that most people will reappear with 24-48 hrs, so instead of creating a missing persons report/open case, they just tell you to wait in hopes that everything will resolve itself.

However, if you suspect foul play, report the case right away!

I would go ahead and file the report to the local police. He will have to call and let them know if he returns fine. He may be a little annoyed, but he will know people cared, and he may not be quite so "free spirited" in the future if he knows people will worry.

I wouldn't worry about bothering the police.. that is their jobs.

HOpe you find him.

If you and his mom can get into his home, see if you can find some credit card statements. His mom will know his social. Have his mom call these companies and check to see if there has been any recent activity. She'll have to pretend she is him.

Very cute kitty!

24 Hours, and they might give you trouble because you aren't family, have his mother do, and add an additional information that is needed.
