I don't have a choice of when to go so no suggestions to go at a later time please. Are there any kind of festivals going on like an art/craft festival during later July to mid August? Also, I'll be celebrating a birthday August. Is there any fun place to go besides the typical getting hammered at a bar?

You can rent a kayak and paddle the Potomac. There are a zillion things to see in D.C. - government buildings, monuments and museums. You can tour the FBI building. There are some stupendous restaurants there, as well. Just be sure to leave plenty of driving time to get where you want to go - lots of traffic and road construction that has been going on for years in the surrounding suburbs!

Do a Yahoo search for
+"washington d.c." +tourism
and you'll find two million websites!

The normal DC sites are cool. Arlington cemetery, Manassas, Mount Vernon, The memorials at the national mall. You can also take a tour of the capital.. but get to the ticket booth in front of the capitol early, because the tour tickets are free, and everyone wants one.

You should also make the drive to Baltimore and go to the inner harbor. You can take a tour of orioles stadium for only about $7. The tour is awesome! The aquarium is fun and there is a hard rock cafe there, and the ESPN zone as well. HAVE FUN!

it is going to likely be warm or extremely warm in both sessions. Many Italians do pass on vacation in the time of August, yet that isn't extremely impact you once you're contained in the numerous vacationer elements. contained in the city the position I lived for the perfect 13 years, many eating places, shops and a number of the motel closed for some weeks in August, yet that wasn't a touristic section. both sessions would have heavy crowds of vacationers. previous due June - early July is extra in all chance to be cooler and really a lot less in all chance to go back across heavy thunderstorms reckoning on the position you visit. you'll have an outstanding time no understand that you opt for.
