Thanks to everybody who answered my question about japanese manners. Now I only have one student instead of 2 and I have another problem. He told us he was a smoker so we told him that he could only smoke outside, not inside and that he had to properly dispose his cigarettes. This weekend when I was cleaning out his room I found several water bottles full of used cigarettes and his bathroom had a strong cigarette smell. Plus the bathroom door was always locked. (He didn't know I had and extra key) After my dad confronted him he denied smoking in the house. Plus we've been wanting to turn on the AC this week but he says that he doesn't need it. It's burning here in SoCal. Is he smoking the bathroom?

He said that he goes outside at midnight to smoke and because he doesn't have an ashtray stuffs them into water bottles. He said that the smell in the bathroom is from him returning to the house with the smell of cigarette smoke on him.

Yes he's smoking!

To a non smoker, cigarettes always smell the worst. The door can be shut to the bathroom, the smell still gets out. Cigarette smoke also leaves behind a residue, and has weight. It will adhere itself to walls, ceilings, carpet, etc. It may appear yellow on a white cloth. Easy to clean once every few days to a week. After months/years it may take a special paint to cover up the stains.

I hate liars, especially ones that stink up my house!!!!

Cigarette smoke gets into everything, so him smoking only outside will not make a difference. Are his dirty clothes in a hamper or something in the bathroom? And I do not understand what turning the AC on would matter if he is or is not smoking in the house. It being on would not cause the smell to linger through out the house.

You can't hide cigarette smoke smell. You know that he is if you can smell it in the bathroom.
