ok added hint
you can drop off any number of bananas at any mile marker, or any fraction of a mile marker

The maximum number of bananas is not an obvious number like 1000, or 500, but rather something like (ex 277)

900 bananas. You make a trip of 375 miles with 1000 bananas and drop off 250 bananas at that mile mark and you have enough bananas to get the camel back to where you started. Camel uses 750 bananas in a round trip. Make the same trip two more times. When you get back you have 1000 bananas left at point A. Now take the last 1000 and go all the way to point B at which point you will be dropping off 375 bananas. Then take 125 bananas you have left, go back to the drop off point you made between A and B and pick up the last 750 bananas and lose 125 bananas making the last trip to point B which gives you 525 you arrive with. All together that gives you 900.

He should be able to get 500 bananas to point b. The first trip that he takes 1000 he drops a banana each mile and feeds the camel a banana. this happens each trip except the last where the camel does not have to come back and thus only eats 500 of the 1000 bananas

Depends on how many bananas the man can carry to feed the camel. The more the man carries, the less come out of the box, and his load gets lighter as he travels.

500
camel eats 1000 bananas per two-way trip, so the only way is to travel one way, keep 500 bananas and let that fat bastard starve

if you have 4 camels, you can get 2000 bananas.

2000 bananas. each of four trips, 1000 bananas will be carried. 500 will make it out of each trip. 500*4=2000

500, any more than that and they would be all gone by the time you got back to where you started to get the rest.
