please explain megapixals for a digital camera!?

Pixels are the dots or squares that make up a digital picture. Like the other answers mention, the more pixels, the clearer the picture. For some image uses, such as small pictures on the computer, one does not need many pixels to make the image. But, if you were to download one of those tiny pictures and blow it up to a large imgage, you would clearly see all the square pixels. angles and curve would not be smooth, but made up of very jagged edges.

For digital cameras, many of these pictures are intended to be printed. An image made up of only a few hundred or even several thousand pixels will not print a very good picture. When you see cameras described they use the term, "Megapixel" One megapiaxel is approximately one thousand pixels. Camera advertized as about 3 megapixel (3 megs) will produce good pictures up to about 4 by 6 inches. Much bigger, such as an 8 by 10 pring will show the jagged edges. (jaggies) For larger prints, a camera rated at 5 or 6 megs is needed.

The higher the megs, the better quality in larger prints. Also the greater cost, since the device that captures the image is much more complex.
