Your friend was talking about Nero Recode, a tool bundled with Nero 7 Ultra Edition. Most DVD movies, like the ones you borrow from your local Blockbuster, take up from 6.5 - 9GB of space. You can shrink a DVD movie down to 4.7GB, which will fit nicely on a single layered DVD blank. However, a CD can only fit up to 700MB. So, you will need a software that can compress the movie to fit on CD. Important, by compressing the movie, you will be sacrificing video quality for a smaller video size. It is not practical to shrink a movie to a single CD because the video quality is terrible. I tend to shrink a movie down to a size that can be burn on to 2 CD's, which has a video quality equal to a VHS.
Here is the step by step process:
1. If you are going to backup a copy protected DVD movie then you will need to have a software program to decrypt the movie before you can do any editing. Nero 7 can not decrypt DVD movies! Programs that can include: DVD decrypter, DVD Shrink, Slysoft AnyDVD, DVD Fab Decrypter and etc. There is no shortage of free programs to decrpt DVD movies. You can find all these program at www.betanews.com. Just enter the name of the software in to the search box and choose all downloads.
2. Once the DVD movie has been decrypted, save these files on to your hard drive. By default, the folder will be labeled Video_TS ( or something similar)
3. Start Nero Recode and scroll down to "Recode DVD and Videos to Nero Digital."
4. In the new window, click on [Import Files] and browse to the Video_TS folder you created before. Highlight it and click [Add Title] > [Finished].
5. Below the [Import Files] button, find the box labeled "Fit to target" and make sure it is checked.
6. Below "Fit to target", click on the selection box and select the size you want the movie to be burn to. I recommend using "2 CDs (80 minutes each."
7. Click [Next]. In the new window, choose a destination for the files to be saved to. For example, my destination drive is D:\ (this is my DVD burner). You don't need to burn them on to a CD. You can save the shrunk video files to a folder on your hard drive.
8. Click [Burn].
9. Go and kill some time. The process will take a couple of hours, it depends on the speed of your computer and how much compression you select.
