cause theyre ignorant. but the main problem is stupidity especially those that travel to other countries and try to speak slow pronoucing every syllable to get their message through. Theyre just spoiled and lazy for not trying to expand their knowledge. But this doesnt apply to all Americans though its just those few that make the rest look bad.

Hubris, arrogance, insularity. They have this ingrained belief that if you wish to do business with them, you must learn their language. Also, English is a good language for thinking, it´s dynamic and constantly changing to adapt to new ways of doing things, products and customs, and since most of the technology is developed in English nations along with the technical jargon that goes with it, thats why.
Other people don´t even bother to learn a new language because they are just plain lazy. Unfortunately other languages have made their way into America and are creating the need to recognize them.
Europe has no such problems, many Europeans speak several languages with no problem at all. America is caught between Canada and Mexico, along with all the rest of Latin America, so the only other language they do know at least that exists is Spanish, and they do not take the trouble to learn it because it belongs to the developing countries who are more interested in doing business with them, than the other way around.
In Mexico there is a lot of pressure to learn English, sometimes your job or a better job depends on it. You can even say that an individual can be discriminated against for not knowing English.
Hope it helps

If you're talking about the fiasco on THIS site, it's because those few Americans who are free to use Yahoo! Answers a LOT don't have enough brains to realise that the internet is open to the WORLD!!
They think it's only in America!
; )
Fortunately, there are LOTS of more intelligent Americans, but they're too busy to spend all day on here, answering any question that contains foreign words with the classic insult "Reported! You's not usin englash!"
lol!!
; )
I know I know...! It's NOT just American twits who have enough spare time to go on the net all day!! There are twits all over the WORLD who can do it, and most of THEM don't realise just how widespread the internet is, either!

If someone lives in the United States then they are an American.
Anyone who lives in America should speak English because it is our national language and if they want to live here then they should make the effort, otherwise stay in their own country.
There is no reason at all that we should all have to be bilingual just because a citizen refuses to learn the language of the nation they live in.

I believe that if you are going to live in a different country, you should speak the native language. I moved to Tunisia from Colorado and now speak both Arabic and Franch as well as English.
That being said, English is the international language of business, and most people choose to learn English for their second language.

I think by generalizing "americans" or really any nation is only adding to a greater problem, one for a different thread. Americans and how they think on all types of subjects differ greatly. I personally dont care what language one speaks and yo hablo espanol as well. So please dont generalize americans, people from other countries seem to think we all have the same views on everything. For the person that started this thread, I feel you are just as arrogant as those americans you seem to dislike, especially if you think we have the same thoughts and views.

that's bullshit. they don't think that. the reason so many people do speak English is because the best quality things comes from America or was made in Britain. both countries speak English and especially Britain has had a huge influence on our world, in fact it was Britain that spread this language not USA and it was through the expansion of their empire. most things we use to day was made in Britain and the original name is English such as television, telephone etc.. its also a very rich language and in my opinion all humans should speak English. that way we wont have communication problems. films have also had affect on the spread of English language. most people like my self learned English because not only i thought it was a language worth knowing but also i was desperate to understand everything that was going on in those Hollywood films. so that's how i learned English.
in my opinion we should all speak English (even though i am not English" why should we speak any other language, the English give us alot of reasons to learn their language, but why should we learn Japanese, Arabic or any other language.
English language is the result of the rich languages from our past such as Latin, German and French. obviously alot of changes have been made to it, but only to make it better.

I don't think expecting the rest of the planet to speak one's mother tongue is unique to Americans and speaking english. I've been all over the world and I can honestly say the sentiment is pretty much pandemic.

Because everybody else does. This world needs a common language, and since China pretty much keeps to themselves, English is a natural winner due to size.

I don't think this at all. I don't think people should go into other peoples countries and expect people to speak their language. I'm not saying they should have to learn it, I'm just saying they shouldn't expect it. Sort of like in the United States, it bothers me when people expect you to speak spanish. I think it's ok for people to have their own communities or parts of town where people speak your language, but I don't think people should have to leanr spanish. I don't think all americans feels this way, and it's kind of offensive for someone to say that about us.
