Is there some sort of standard for such a thing?
I'm skilled at a rather eclectic blend of things,
but I'm just as willing to lend voice/thoughts/hope
as I am to lend hands....
I can't seem to find a better catagory for this than 'community service', so I WOULD like to note that this is not forced labor :)

No one has mentioned the Red Cross yet... I give them at least twenty hours a week (when I'm not enrolled in classes full time) and have been doing it for over two years. It is the second most rewarding experience I've ever known (the first being childbirth, of course).
I work with the Apheresis department with blood services, but there are many areas in which you can volunteer within that organization.

wherever you volunteer, with whichever organization, your efforts will be vastly appreciated

First its very important that you find a cause that you believe in to spend your time and talent on. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida is to provide a home-away-from-home for children and families of children suffering a medical crisis. This is a mission that I find very important so that would be where I would choose to volunteer. Just research local charities, find a need and fill it. Most of all have fun!

I have some slave labor for you, dear, but it is not local.
locally you can go to your local community hospital and talk to the social worker, they have books like phone books of local organizations and which part of the community they serve, and gives you an idea about the organiztion so you can choose one most suited to your interests, also you might want to try volunteering at your local independent radio station , you will most likely most interesting people in that type of environment

Try these websites for information on a variety of organizations you may be interested in assisting and to find out more about what you can do to help. You can even find opportunities for assisting "virtually" from the comfort of your home!

I'm sure there are many other websites that can help get you started, but I hope these will help. Good luck!
