The most important thing to do, is contact a vet, and set up an appointment to find out the underlying cause of the complications, and get the proper care to help it go away.
I've rubbed the back of a few cats that had a cough, so that might bring short-term relief.

Sounds like hairballs. One home remedy you can use it to put a little bit of Vaseline on your finger and let you cat lick it off. I used this on my cat and he stopped coughing up the hairballs. My vet suggested this. If you want to be sure call your local vet and ask about this method. It is cheap and easy. Cats do like the taste of Vaseline.

That sound often means he's trying to cough up a hairball. If he does it a lot, put a little vaseline on his paw to lick. That helps the hairballs go down instead of up.
I've noticed that long-haired cats get them worse than short-haired cats.

Sounds like your cat has a cold. It needs to see a vet. Cats have very delicate and complicated sinus cavities. I was snowed in with a cat with a cold ( he just laid in his litter box with his tongue hanging out) and I fed him chicken broth from chicken noodle soup with an eye dropper (he didn't want it) after he quit fighting me we advanced to baby food meats. After the roads opened up I took him to the vet and he said "I couldn't of done a better job" and that he was pretty much over his cold.

Maybe your cat is trying to cough up a hairball? I usually rub my kitty's tummy when he does that. Then I give him some grass to eat, and also, about 1 inch of Petromalt.

Sounds like fur balls......or even an allergy. If you haven't tried treating your cat for fur balls.....then you'll need to. You can go to a vet and get some medicine that will take care of fur balls, and ask the vet how to apply the medicine. Best of luck to you......

a pat of butter is good for hairballs too. Just don't laugh at the cat because he will get mad at you.
