New York City is composed of five counties, called boroughs. It is more than just Manhattan, which is generally the most expensive.
If you live in one of the four outer boroughs, it will be generally be cheaper. Consider Astoria, Woodside, or Jackson Heights, which are all in Queens and accessible to Manhattan by subway.

All depends on your definition of not too expensive and how big an apt you want. Keep in mind that the rental market in nyc is very tight with less than 1% vacancy. More and more people are living on Long Island or in Brooklyn where it is not as costly

North Carolina! A very many new Yorkers are Moving to the South. It is getting more and more violent here in NY and the rents are often bigger than monthly incomes.

Upstate NY or Connecticut. Take the train or coach bus if you want to work and/or party in the city.

queens, nyc...perferably forest hills/rego park/elmhurst area...where there's easy transportation (subway, buses), diversity, and not so populated/not so suburban either.
