If you had to hit him to get the purse back, I would say it's justified. If you just hit him cuz you were pissed at him, i would say, no, it's not really necessary. But just because a person is mentally challenged doesn't mean they shouldn't still know right from wrong and be punished accordingly. In a sick way, I am dying from laughing so hard... but it's also kind of sad. If he was handicapped, did he not have someone with him?

NO!!!!!!!!!!! You admit you knew this gentleman was ill. You should have just asked for the purse back. You did not have to hit him. What is wrong with you that makes you feel justified assaulting a mentally handicapped individual. I understand he took the purse but did it ever occur to you he may not be aware of what he is doing. You however were very aware and chose to take your anger out on a helpless victim. I hope you do not have children.

I don't think that you were justified in hitting the man. It is justified to use "reasonable" force to get the purse back, but I don't think that you had the need to hit him more than once. After you got the purse you should have just notified the authorities and let him be properly dealt with.

Maybe the people that commented felt you could have gotten her purse back without being violent. Was he struggling and/or putting up ap fight so you were unable to get the purse back or did you hit him after you claimed the purse.

You sort of did the right thing but you shouldn't have hit him more than once. Come on he's mentally challenged and has cancer, he has been through alot in life.

Did you need to hit him in order to get the purse back?
How you answer this question will answer your justification question.

Hard to judge, your description sounds like a lot of force, however, handicap/illness is no excuse for theft.
