If it plays music CDs but not DVDs, then it probably isnt a problem with the lens, since it uses the lens to read the CDs.

Are these "store-bought" DVDs, or copies of movies someone gave you, etc.? Many DVD players (especially those in your PC) may have difficulty reading DVDs burned on a computer because of the different formats available such as DVD - and DVD +, read-only and R/W (rewriteable) discs and the like. Some players might read a DVD + disc happily, but not a DVR - disc. "Store-bought" DVDs should play OK (if your player isn't defective) assuming that the discs and player are the same "region"....the USA is region 1, other countries may used different video formats and hence have different region discs and players.

Note that many purported "factory" DVDs purchased off sellers from eBay are often bootleg copies burned on PC equipment, and many of these copies may not read properly in your player.

Are you trying different movie formats?

DVD's are manufactured for different geographical zones. So if your dvd player plays US dvds, it probably won't play a dvd intended for sale in, say, Germany.

We have a dvd player that won't play dvd movie formats, but it does play svcd, vcd, and mpg formats, along with mp3.

It's broken, or your DVD's are. Bring it in to a local electronic shop to get it checked and/or fixed.
