There are so many philosophical and scientific answers to this question, many people don't stop to consider the straight answer. For example, why is the sky blue? It's not because of water refracting light beams from the sun, or God making the sky blue, it's just that it is not any other color but blue. What is life about? Life is about staying alive or dying. There are no other qualms about life except survival. One can argue that it is about making the best of every day and living life to its fullest, but don't you do that anyways? The sad truth is, there is no answer to this question. There is no guiding light to tell you what to do with yourself, there is only life.
However, reproduction does play a major role in life.
If you really really really want to know what life is about, download the book "God's Debris" by Scott Adams (available at www.dilbert.com) (yes, the creator of dilbert has an existentialistic novel, but it explains a lot). For all of your other answers, consult a magic 8 ball.

It is about what YOU do.
We're not handed a manual when we're born - we're suppose to chart our own course for better or worse.
The middle word in "life" is "if" - as in what if you did this, what if you did that.
Life is what happens when you make other plans.
Now - go out and make plans, chart your own course and discover the world around you.
