Looks like you are looking for some sort of terrier. Do not however get a Jack Russel Terrier. They are not like the dog that is on frasier or wishbone. They can be snippy to little ones and they are known to chase and kill cats because they are a sporting dog. I had a border Terrier when I was little. I had so much fun with that dog. He followed me everywhere. Check them out online. Also I know that there are some quizes online about choosing the right dog for you.

I would recommend the terrier breeds. If your looking for more of a companion for the family Scottish terriers are really good. I have two and they get along with kids and everyone else. With these dogs though you need to train them because they really do like to play, so if you have kids old enough that may be something to consider. I would also suggest maybe a pug or even a basset hound. I've had a basset hound and they are very good with kids and mine was very calm and laid back. When you do buy a dog make sure that it's from a reputable breeder or you may have a dog that has behavior problems or something else. The last thing to remember is to make sure that you get the dog when it's a puppy. That way it can become accustomed to your life style and your kids.

Just be aware of each breed's pro's and con's. A lab, while very loyal, requires a great deal of room to run. Jack Russel terriers are very energetic dogs. My advice would be to check out http://www.akc.org They list traits off different breeds. Also, consider the pound. There are lots of great dogs that people simply tired of taking care of. Many are already trained, thus eliminating the exhausting housebreaking phase. Based on what you've said, I would look into a Bichon Frise. They are small and very loyal and actually have hair, as do Lhasa Apsos. Dogs with hair don't shed nearly as much as those with fur and if you keep the hair short it will be even less.

Labs are big dogs and I definately do not recommend jack russels for if you want to be sure it will be good with the family (sorry to all of you who love them they can be wonderful, but also can be dominant) The best thing for you to do is go to the book store and buy a book about different dog breeds. Look throught the book for dogs that appeal to you and then read about their characteristics. Then decide what will be best for you. Or go to the animal shelter and look for a very small puppy - or small dog. shelter animals are often the very best because they can have characteristics from different breeds. Tell the shelter what you are looking for and they can help you.

An ideal dog for a young family would be a short haired Jack Russell terrier. He will be protective, faithful and loyal and most importantly, he should live 11 or 12 years. They shed very little hair and are easily house trained.

A toy dog would be good. Toy dogs come in all sizes and are good with children, cats, and maybe other dogs later on. Toy dogs don't shed either. And also, your children probably won't develop any allergy against toy dogs either

Jack Russell Terriers are the best for kids and other dogs. They are high energy, they love everybody and are very eager to please. Very very smart and easy to train. There are several types from wire hair to smooth coat to short legged to long legged. As for loosing hair, well, A vacume cleaner works quite well. Dogs shed when it is hot and when they put on a new coat. It is a small price to pay for such a fun loving dog!

Boston Terrier. Look @ the akc website, these dogs were bred to be companions to humans. Great with kids, little shedding, HIGHLY intelligent. We've had labs, the boston is a much more house friendly dog. Trust me!!

Labs are big and shed and terriers are very hyper.
I have a Powder Puff Chinese Crested he's great with my kids and other animals.
No min-pins they are not good with kids they are territorial and will bite anyone even it's master if it's bothered and not in the mood to be messed with.
