Under properties of your printer you can adjust the ink , Making it darker or lighter.
The best way is in your photo software. If you know it prints darker then your screen is showing (your monitor could be set to bright) then just fiddle with it till you get it right, printing on plain paper. Once it looks good, then print on photo stock.

I use photo editing software to lighten digital photos that are too dark. My current favorite is Adobe PhotoShop Elements (about $100) which has an "autofix" that actually works. Also, it has an organizational system that will let you virtually "stack" bunches of similar photos (as in, when your kids take 20 photos of Mickey and they mostly look the same).
If the photos look okay on your screen and still print dark, try adjusting your printer settings. If you have an ink jet, you might even want to set your printer on "draft" so that less ink is used.

I bought a cheap Lexmark printer...I think it's about $30 at Walmart. I'm amazed at how well the colors are when I print out photos, whether it's on photo paper or plain paper. The model number is Z515. Ink runs about $27 for color and $18 for B&W.

Printing on white photo paper helps. I use photo editing software to lighten my photos also.
