it's definately not the worst pain ever (child birth is said to hold that title)...yeah, it hurts the first few times you get them tightened, but you get used to it and eventually it's no big deal...just take a pain reliever and you should be fine

I had braces my senior year in high school 8 years ago for 16 months. They do hurt a little, and sometimes you get your cheeks or lips caught on them, but it's not the worst pain in the world. Over the counter pain killers will get you through the day or two after tightenings and start very slowly with eating again. Soft food and shakes will be your friend for several days. I was about 15 pounds over weight and I had no problem losing that weight kinda fast without realizing it because I couldnt eat chips or burgers for a long time. So if you're smaller already, be sure to watch out for that.
And to answer your other questions, no it's not true, you shouldn't fear it at all and be happy you can have the luxury of affording braces, and it's not that bad.

Your mouth will be sore every time they're tightened but not so bad really. You might have to do soup and shakes for a day and a couple of Tylenol helps. The spacers they usually put between your teeth just before installing the braces were very uncomfortable but nothing you can't stand. The pain is definitely worth the gain. You'll have a beautiful smile!

Braces aren't as bad as people expect them to be. I wore mine for 4 years (I needed them that badly) At first they feel like a mouthfull, and, yes, they are uncomfortable. it is more of a tight pressure. You will feel this when they are first put on, and everytime they are tightened. That will be done every couple of weeks. I found that taking even just one advil took care of a lot of the discomfort, but it is completely bearable without anything. The discomfort from tightening usually is gone in a few days. my advice during that period is to stick with soft foods (soups, pastas, etc.) One piece of advice I would like to give is to keep the braces clean. They can be a bit of a food trap. PLus, by the time you get them removed you'll have a beautiful smile....you don't want a mouth full of cavaties. Hope this helps.

It's definitely not the worst pain ever... I'm sure there are things much worse. They really only hurt when you get them tightened and even then some sort of pain reliever will usually help. It's really not that bad.

I didn't think braces hurt too bad. I always took some Tylenol before getting adjustments. Just do what the dentist tells you so that you can hurry up and get them off. I never wore the rubber bands and it took an extra three months. Eek!

it doesn't hurt THAT bad... but i'm sure you'll need some time to get use to it. i wore braces for a year and a half and will get them taken off later this month.. i think i'll miss 'em..
no need to worry.. just think about the amazing results you'll get after you wore them!!
