If you're considering doing this, I would first of all make sure that your land will be in your family for a long time to come. There are plenty of stories about whole families being "uprooted" and moved to a regular cemetary because the land was sold to someone other than family, or was confiscated by the state.
After that, I'm sure that you'd have to have a permit to bury human remains on your land, so I'd call up your city hall and find out who you need to speak to.

In most states it is legal to bury someone in a family plot. I'd first check with a local funeral home and then with your county. I'm sure there is a ton of paperwork and your land may have to be surveyed to make sure you don't have a feeder creek under the property or anything else that would impact the environment. I think it's well worth looking into, though. Good luck!

In most states one does not have to do anything. You don't need a license or permit to bury someone on your own property. You can dig holes anywhere provided you aren't disturbing utility lines (which should be marked).

you need to check with your local town or city clerk to see if there are any ordinances in your area that would prohibit home burial. There would be a fair amount of paperwork. Each locality has its own laws and ways of dealing with this particular situation.

Separate the land from the rest of the lot and deed the land to itself. It thenceforth can never be developed, sold, etc . . . .
