i'm a female and the agility test here in ny for troopers is no joke...they give us a little break but not much... I don't know about your state but here in ny you have to score really high on the test then you get called for the physical then back ground... just a work of advise start training in running, push-ups, sit ups......but demand for females and minorities are high...good luck

Take your courses in Criminal Justice. regardless of your college education it can all go out the window because nothing will bring you up to speed quicker than the streets.
But collge will give you a base knowledge of penal code, search and seizure rules and juvenile laws.
Alot of police work is common sense. To be an exceptional cop is to be a good listener, analytical and know how to read people and their body language.
Competition is always tough. that's because the benefits and pensions are hard to beat and you don't usually run the risk of getting screwed over on your pensions like in the private sector.

Also be aware that the majoirty of the people you deal with you'll despise. Most treat you like dirt because they're ignorant and think they can...and cry that you're "rude" and disrespectful to them Of course....it's okay for them to be that way. "fraid not. If you're a piece of sh*t I've never had problems telling you so. Don't like it? Tough. You get back what you give and I may be a public servant but I'm no public slave. Be ready to solve peoples problems because for the most part the majority of them can't tie their own shoes without having to depend upon someone else.
Plus..they get mad when you can't fix right then and there what took them months or years to create.
Takes a special person to be a cop. People who say that they hate cops are ususally the ones who have had contact....sometimes weekely...with the police and those who wouldn't give you the time of day but guess who they call when they have a gripe?
So be ready to deal with idiots, criminals, people who won't accept responsibility for their actions and some of the worst and heartwretching times you'll ever have to deal with in your life.
Plus...no one will understand except another cop. Because they've been there.

Good luck. Hope you join the brother/sisterhood.

Actually you are at an advantage being a girl, if you can handle the work! There is a need for more females in law enforcement, due to the increasing number of women involved in crime, so you might have a better chance than some of the men. Make sure you are in good shape physically, and do well in school to increase your chances.

IF you really want to be a police officer you will have to be willing to move and apply to one of the 100's of departments around your state.

Depending on your state, The Federal Deposit people have thier own police, The dept of Agriculture have thier own police officers in many areas, Most colleges have police forces, the Railroad have police officers and so on.

So if you want to be an officer you apply to about 20 to 40 departments at least.
