There are many ways to tell if a group is a "cult" and SDA's fit into many of these categories as do many religions. The thing to do is do some research, I know there are many books written on the subjects of cults and the SDA's in particular.

Do not go into a conversation with your family without doing research and knowing what you will say in advance. It takes preparation to get your point across clearly and without offending someone.

If you are not willing to do the work then don't get involved.

It would seem that you are very misinformed about the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is not a cult because it does not fit any of the requirements for a cult. SDA's do not teach that only Sabbath keepers can be saved, that only SDA's can be saved, or that vegetarianism is required. They do teach that people of all religions can be saved because God is the only one that knows the hearts of men; also, although they teach that vegetarianism is a good life choice, it is not required - one must only follow the health laws as outlined in the book of Leviticus.

The statement, "The weird underwear, the marrying several wives, the "married for all eternity thing..." is actually referring to Mormons - not SDAs.

Hello,
my friend has the same views as you do, but i must say that i disagree with you both. I will admit that they do take things to the extreme, however there are some good SD-Adventists out there. I believe that as long as those good individuals remain close to the Lord, then when Christ returns their eyes will be opened. As far as the extremist, I am really afraid for them. They focus entirely on the day, and not the deliverer. They are so wrapped up in the Sabbath, that they tend to ignore real issues. They believe that as long as they observe the"day" then they are save. Now that is when it becomes an occult. For you I believe that you should tell your parents that you have a general concern about practices in the Church. It is always best to be honest about your feelings. Then let them know that you are going to still remain in the faith, however you are going to attend another christian based, bible believing church, for a different approach. Also read the book of Mark 2 vs.23-28.. This is just one example of people who even back then in the presence of God on earth, was still worshiping the day instead of the deliverer. Study the new testament in its entirety for yourself and you the Lord will make it plain for you...

A sister in Christ.

Seventh Day Adventists is not a cult. It is a religion that follows the old testament to a certain degree. If I were going to believe in the bible I would either be a SDA or one of the similar beliefs. They follow the bible more accurately than "traditional" christianity. They do not have several wives.

From the Christian Research Institute (equip.org):

Since Seventh-day Adventism does officially accept the foundational doctrines of historic Christianity (the inspiration and authority of the Bible, the Trinity, Christ's true deity, His bodily resurrection, and salvation by grace through faith) we do not believe that it should be classified as a cult.

This does not mean that we endorse the entire theological system of Adventism, since a portion of it is definitely out of the mainstream of historic Christian theology.

Do some research. Compare it to what you believe. Come up with convincing arguments. I believe alot of the pseodo-Christian "religions" are cults.

Depending on how involved they are though, your best and only recourse may be to pray. My god-childen's mother was getting involved in one of them, and i sent out an email to everyone I know asking for prayer. It worked! Praise God!

Before confronting them, you better come up with some evidence. What activities is the church doing that may look like cult-like activities?
Without evidence, you will piss off a lot of people.
