Because not too long ago, people didn't know it was bad and addiction takes a long time to overcome. Advertising used to say "The cigarette that doctors smoke". People in the army got free cigarettes given to them, and started smoking then. It used to be the "in thing" to do. There wasn't the really big anti-smoking campaign until this last generation coming up. It is really, really hard to quit. It is said to be harder to quit than heroin. I don't think the government wants people to quit because they keep increasing the tax on it and they would loose money, not to mention the jobs that would be lost. They seem to think the benefits of it's use has a more positive benefit to the tax base and economy than the bad affects. Pretty sad huh. That's just my opinion. I'm glad you think it's disgusting. I think all the extra tax money should be used to help people who want to quit, like buy patches, gum, or a med to help them stop.

Because it is an addiction. Just like people are addicted to crack cocaine, alcohol, meth, etc., cigarrettes do the same thing. It causes people to become addicted.
I do believe that SOME people truly want to quit, but I would think its harder to say than it is to do.
Just like alcohol, its a big LEGAL money maker, so why not continue with the sales of cigarrettes? The makers aren't forcing anyone to smoke, its the consumer's right to use the products or not! Everything is basically bad for you...you have the power to put what you want in your body. Its a grown-up decision.
By the way...I am not a smoker :o)

I have friends that say that it is just a way to relieve stress without doing something really wrong, like drugs. Others say that they need something to put them in a good mood at a party or family gathering. The government just wants to make money off of our mistakes. I refuse to smoke because my friends have ended up having to choose between smoking and more important things like eating, spending time with someone, saving money, etc.

To answer one of your questions, some people smoke because it is additive and very difficult to just stop. I know that smoking is bad for you, but I have an addiction to cigarettes. Like some people suck there fingers( knowing its harmful to their teeth).
All I am saying is don't fault people for something that they my not be able to control.

It starts with peer pressure and ends in addiction. It is probably the most addictive drug out there.

The government would rather just use these reasons you're talking about to tax smokers to death. Just thank all the smokers for all the extra taxes we pay, thanks to Clinton, and worry about your own problems.
