Every cat is different. Mine meow at me all the time. I think that meowing is a last resort. If my cats can't get my attention then they meow at me. So I would have to say that they probably use body language to communicate with each other and since they both understand there is no need for meowing. However my cat Piper has no problem hissing when my other cat Hunter plays too rough.

Watch cats a little closer, becuse they DO meow at other cats. Cats actually have 7 different mews which some call "words". How else do you think a family of cats communicate? Haven't you ever heard a mother cat meow a certain way to let the babies know it's time to eat? But, yes, cats DO meow at each other, you just have to pay a little more attention, that's all.

My cat meows at me about alot of things. He meows nonestop in the morning and even wakes me up. He will jump on the bed and meow, if I have no response he will lick my face. Then I will wake up and feed him because I know that is what he wants. He will also meow if he wants his litter box clean. He will wait and meow right beside the box. He is a demanding cat, but he is perfect. He also sits and stands up for his treats. Awww

I guess it depends on the cat...my 2 (indoor only) sometimes meow at other cats (outside), but not at each other. I think that, when possible, cats will communicate by physical contact; they use the verbal meow to get attention when they cannot communicate with physical contact.

In the case of humans, they have probably adapted to our verbal method of communication, either because they sense that humans like to hear them meow or because they understand that we communicate verbally and they assume our behavior to get our attention.

A meow is NOT naturally in the cats language.

Cats communicate by purr, hiss, action, re-action, motion.

Meowing happens around humans cause cats realize we are a vocal species and this is how we communicate.

It is also why every cat owner SWEARS their cat is talking to them, saying their name, saying they want out, etc.

Like a parrot the cat hears "snowball wanna go out?, wanna go out?". So the cat tries its best to say what it hears and a Mee-Out comes out and the owner jumps up and down thinking, WOW, my cat just said Me Out meaning he wants out!!

Find and watch a pure wild cat in the wild and they will not meow. Ever see a lion or tiger meow on TV or National Geographic??? Nope...cause they don't do it.

Mother cats and their kittens meow at each other all the time. I think they meow when looking for each other or when they want something. They meow at us for attention or treats. They don't give one another attention and treats like we do.

They probably do when people aren't around! Cats tend to use body language more so they probably don't need to meow at other cats.

It's all in how cats communicate. They try to emulate us in a lot of different ways, but when it comes to vocalisation, they just don't have the proper gear for the job. This is why your cat maeows at you. It is attempting to communicate with you, as it knows that humans don't rely on body language to communicate, but rather, sounds. But some cats DO maeow at each other, it's difficult to know which types of cat do this the most.

actually, cats communicate with other animals by making low growls, squeaks, etc. The only time a cat actually says "MEOW" is when answering you when you call, greet you if youve been gone, and to backtalk before they swat you and stomp off.
