For this I would recommend an HDMI connection, its the ultimate in sound and video quality in just one cable, of course, your home theater unit and the tv have to have an HDMI port, if your tv or the DVD dont have a HDMI, you can go with component cables (red, green, blue cables and the yellow video cable) or with S-Video (red, white cables with the S-Video cable) I would opt for HDMI, if you cant go that road, use Component or S-video, and if that doesnt work, at least you got your good old analog cables.

The most important thing you can do is set up your DVD player and TV for best picture quality. To do that, you should get a test DVD such as "Digital Video Essentials" (http://www.videoessentials.com/) or the Avia http://www.ovationmultimedia.com/avia.html) test DVD. These discs will lead you through step-by-step procedure for propery adjusting brightness, contrast and sharpness for the best picture. No matter how good your components are, if the picture is not set up properly you are not getting the best results.

Technically you won't be able to.As in preserving with my analyze element will assist you recieve 480/720/1080 i/p yet no longer HD formats like blue ray and hd dvd With the subsequent wave of HD dvd gamers, i extremely doubt it in the experience that they'd be employing that format. The PS3 would have element as an option yet as you comprehend, consoles dont extremely make good dvd gamers and also you'll not manage to have blue ray dvd's by element by using reproduction safe practices themes. so a options as memory serves me, those new gamers (study blue ray and hd dvd) will be employing HDMI which really passes on the audio and the video interior a similar cable(by using reproduction safe practices themes aka HDCP - severe definition content safe practices). if so, you've were given complications in the experience that your television does no longer have HDMI or HDCP in a position DVI inputs (which i'm guessing it may no longer). the best information is that your standard (SD- known definition) DVD's will look top notch. you'll manage to upconvert your standard dvd's yet you is purely no longer waiting to recieve the desirable high quality out of your hd dvds.

The absoloute best available picture available on DVD right now is HD-DVD or BluRay DVD using and HDMI cable. They are both really expensive though. For now, until someone wins, I would recommend a "upconvert" dvd player and an HDMI cable.

Get a decent quality (not Monster) component video patch cord and set the DVD player to "progressive scan". This will give you the best possible performance from your DVD player.

Also be sure to use a power filter on your system.
And no, it's not the same as a surge protector.
